What Can I Expect During My First Year of College?

Everyone experiences freshman year in a different way. There is a lot to be excited about when going away to college—making new friends, being more independent, becoming involved in a community, and discovering new passions. However, many students also often wonder why no one told them how difficult the first semester of college might be. Managing unrealistic expectations is one challenge many students encounter during the first year of college, but there are many more.

Some common challenges graduating high school seniors face when transitioning to college include:

  • A surplus of free time

  • Missing your old routine

  • Doing new tasks on your own (laundry, cooking, etc.)

  • Difficulty making new friends

  • Feelings of isolation

  • Roommate conflicts

  • Missing friends and family

  • Peer pressure (drinking, hookup culture, etc.)

Understanding these challenges before or soon after you arrive at school will better equip you to deal with these challenges quickly and efficiently. For example, creating a schedule for yourself, learning how to cook a few new meals over the summer, and making a plan to keep an open line of communication with your roommate may all help facilitate an easier transition.

Some students find that talking regularly with a therapist can provide a sense of stability and normalcy during a time when so much is changing. A therapist or life coach can help you navigate this transition and make the most out of your college experience.
